Spectacular, long, crimson tubular flowers, March-May, on medium green foliage. New growth is golden. Erect habit 3' x 2' wide. Very floriferous. This is a spectacular plant in bloom. This Hummingbird Heath™ is loaded with nectar. It is a Cape Heath from South Africa, only hardy to 28 degrees F. We grow them successfully in the greenhouses here in Western Washington with no heat. In the odd very cold spell, we take them into an unheated more protected facility. Needs acid soil mix. Very rare - you won't find this at your neighbor's house!
We have recently learned that this is actually named Erica ‘Winter Fire’ as it is most likely a hybrid between E. mammosa and E. oatesii. |
